1CC23.0000.0030artworks (art)Oyster Sanctuary, Glazed ceramic, found objectsJeff DombekArtist statement: A vibrant Chesapeake Bay 100 years from now: difficult decisions made leading up to and at the turn of the 21st century could someday reveal that our generation not only attempted, but also succeeded at good stewardship of the Bay. Reducing the human impact on the land and water, supporting grassroots programs like oyster gardening, planting underwater grasses, and building oyster sanctuaries could all someday prove to be the key difference makers for the Chesapeake Bay to prosper once again. Thriving communities of filter-feeding oysters and acres of healthy underwater grasses translate into thriving communities above the waters of the Bay as well. May it all come true for our beloved estuary.

Jeff Dombek
Columbia, MarylandCBMM catalog imageView

The prose narrative was researched and written by George Howard Post. Background Information George Howard Post, a junior high school social studies teacher, researched his family's genealogy for his personal use. While visiting the Museum he noticed that George Washington Horsman built the skipjack E.C. Collier. The builder Horsman has a cousin relationship (degree undetermined) with Post's great-grandfather, who was also a George Washington Horsman (b. 1850 d. 1910/1917). Scope and ContentThe prose narrative and accompanying census material document the Horsman family from the arrival of Thomas Horsman in 1676-1677 in Dorchester County, Maryland, probably from northwest England as an indentured servent. The Townsend and Shorter family lines enter the narrative in the 1860s and 1870s.No image URL.View
